Flower Drum Song is a 1961 American musical film directed by Henry Koster, adapted from the 1958 Broadway musical Flower Drum Song, written by the composer Richard Rodgers and the lyricistlibrettist Oscar Hammerstein II, in turn based on the 1957 novel of the same name by the Chinese American author Chin Yang Lee. The film stars Nancy Kwan, James Shigeta, Miyoshi Umeki, Jack Soo, Benson Fong, and Juanita Hall. It was nominated for five Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion. Flower Drum Song subtitled A Jazz Interpretation by the Mastersounds is an album by The Mastersounds led by vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery with pianist Richie Crabtree, bassist Monk Montgomery and drummer Benny Barth featuring performances of tunes from Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical Flower Drum Song recorded in 1958 and released on the World Pacific label. Flower Drum Song Rogers and Hammerstein Original Film Soundtrack - Alfred Newman and his Orchestra. So, for example, the first show that Columbia got was South Pacific, the fourth Rodgers & Hammerstein production, in 1949. The label also got Flower Drum Song in 1958 and The Sound of Music, the final Rodgers & Hammerstein show, in 1959, and it also released an album drawn from the Rodgers & Hammerstein television musical Cinderella in 1957. The only Rodgers and Hammerstein cinemadaptation to be produced by Universal Pictures, Flower Drum Song was, alas, also the only Rogers and Hammerstein film to lose money at the box office. It looks far better now than it did back in 1961, if only because of the paucity of musical films in the 1990s. Essentially a comedy about the culture clash between old-world Chinese and assimilated Chinese-Americans, the film begins when Mei Li Miyoshi Umeki and her grandfather Kam Tong smuggle themselves into San Francisco. It seems that Mei Li has arrived to honor an arranged marriage between herself. Select a specific search field: All fields Artist Title Artist Title Label Seller Item .
