The Leningrad première of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 took place on 9 August 1942 during the Second World War, while the city of Leningrad now St. Petersburg was under siege by Nazi German forces. Dmitri Shostakovich had intended the piece to be premièred by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, but because of the siege, that group was evacuated from the city, as was the composer himself. The world première of the symphony was held on 5 March 1942 in Kuybyshev with the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra. 7, - Leningrad - 4. Allegro non troppo Live. What is most interesting about this album is the liner notes that go along about Shostakovitch's approach to writing the 7th and how it was characterized by the Stalin government. It is impossible to deny the overwhelming impact Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 had on its listeners in 1942. Written by Shostakovich after he had been transported out of his besieged hometown of Leningrad, the Seventh is a patriotic hymn to his city and country and a rallying cry to the foes of fascism. Its premiere in the . was world news, and the securing its first performance rights in the West was contested by Toscanini, Stokowski, and Koussevitzky. Toscanini won, and the work was rapturously received and repeatedly performed. Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 6 & 7 Incidental Music to King Lear - Boston Symphony Orchestra, Andris Nelsons.
