Putting it Together is a musical revue showcasing the songs of Stephen Sondheim. Drawing its title from a song in Sunday in the Park with George, it was devised by Sondheim and Julia McKenzie. The revue has received several productions, beginning with its premiere in England in 1992, Broadway in 1999 and the West End in 2014. The revue came about due to many requests for an update to Side by Side by Sondheim 1976. Having resisted a new show, he was finally convinced by producer Cameron Mackintosh. Stephen Sondheim's humorous, poignant and sophisticated musical review of his classic Broadway shows, including numbers from Anyone can Whistle, Follies and Sweeney Todd. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh, this tells the story of five guests attending a Manhattan cocktail party and the relationships and emotions which tie them all together. Featuring Ruthie Henshall and John Barrowman this is one of Broadway's most successful review shows. Stephen Sondheim. Putting It Together: A Musical Review. Your Rating. I own the album from the 1994 version and I was for some strange reason surprised that this is NOT the same script or score. It is a wonderful show, don't get me wrong, but you can see practically the whole thing for free on Youtube. The cast is fantastic, and the show is a short but fun adventure. Putting It Together review. 4, 5 stars 4 out of 5 stars. St James Theatre, London Giving this revue of Sondheim numbers a narrative may be a little tenuous, but it's a feast of pleasure delivered with real verve. Michael Billington. It's a sign of Stephen Sondheim's fecundity that his work as a composer-lyricist has spawned at least three musical revues. This one, first seen in Oxford in 1992 with Diana Rigg and later in New York with Julie Andrews, is at last getting its London premiere. What immediately separates it from its most famous predecessor, Side by Side by Sondheim, is that it uses songs from different works to tell a story. PUTTING IT TOGETHER St James Theatre. Verdict: A Sondheim smorgasbord. Rating: Game old Janie Dee flings her armpits around to fairly good effect in an evening of Stephen Sondheim songs at the St James Theatre. Some people in London are nuts about Sondheim. I find a dollop of him goes quite a reasonably long way. The 32 numbers crammed in to this tightly produced show are frequently exceptional for their lyrics and their jazzy completeness but many of the melodies meld into a satisfactory sort of mush. There is a sameness to them - but given his prolific output, this is hardly a surprise. Album 1993 29 Songs. Julie Andrews, Stephen Collins, Rachel York, Michael Rupert & Christopher Durang.
